The 4 Animals of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen |
Bingatan Ampat (4 animals) and the Naga | ||
|
The movements of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen are inspired by the crane, monkey, snake, and tiger. The movements are fluid and beautiful but deadly. Together these movements allow the Poekoelan student to defend themselves in many different ways and from many different positions, standing, from the air, or from the ground. A Poekoelan student learns to use each fighting style in order to adapt to any situation.
Blekok (Crane)From the Crane we get aerial and multiple kicking techniques, one legged stances, long range striking, fist blows, and parries. The variations within the crane are the fluid White Crane, the erratic Mad Crane , and deceptive Lazy Crane.
Oeler (Snake)From the snake we learn fast multiple striking from any position, spiraling and weaving motions, and short range sweeping. Advanced striking and wrapping techniques come from the Cobra and King Cobra.
Monjet (Monkey)From the monkey we get grounded stances, acrobatic movements, parries, grabbing, and pounding fists. The different aspects of this animal style are the playful but vicious Monkey, the Drunken Monkey, and the powerful Ape.
Matjan (Tiger) Our ground fighting system is called "matjanan" meaning "like the tiger." "Anything you can do standing you can do on the ground" our instructors like to say. From the tiger comes ground fighting techniques like leaping, ripping, sweeping, and pinning either a grounded or standing attacker. The three-limbed fighting style of Harimau and Matjanan Tiengi (Leaping Tiger) are also used. |
In advanced Poekoelan training the student learns to flow effortlessly from one animal to the next. We gain inspiration from the spirit or energy (Ilmu) of each animal to help us learn how to move and how to protect ourselves. More advanced students train the spirit of the Naga or the Indonesian Dragon.
