Welcome to Poekoelan in Tacoma!

We train in a very effective, beautiful, and complete Indonesian martial art. We are part of a network of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen (poo-koo-lan/chi-min-di/ too-len) schools under the direction of Barbara Niggel, a direct student of Mas Goeroe Agoeng Willy Wetzel, the founder of our art. When choosing a martial art to train in consider how important it is to pick a thorough style. We train all techniques from stand up self defense to weapons to ground fighting and practice moving from all positions. But beyond our diverse physical self defense techniques Poekoelan is an artform valueing self dicipline, creative freedom, respect and ethics.

Classes are available to men, women and children. Classes are taught in a challenging but non-competitive environment to anyone that wants to learn. Our style of Poekoelan is adaptable for someone with physical challenges or for an athlete in excellent physical condition. We are not a commercially oriented school and only wish to find others that love training and want to be part of our community. Poekoelan training teaches valuable self defense techniques and also develops all aspects of fitness including strength, stamina, flexibility, mental relaxation, and spiritual focus. We are conveniently located on the edge of downtown Tacoma at 745 Broadway on Antique Row.

We share space with other great and talented teachers. Qi Qong, Nia classes (a fusion of Yoga, martial arts, and dance), submission wrestling, kick boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) classes are also available. You can check out our class schedule ("Classes") for details.

Free First Class

There are many different martial arts to choose from. We will give you a free private lesson and first class with no obligation and are confident you will like our adaptable, interesting, and effective style. All types of people and level of abilities are welcome to come and participate in our art and we look forward to training with you. Mixed Martial Arts Competition Team: T-TOWN MMA

Poekoelan Martial Arts is proud to be a practice location for MMA Coach Jimmy Thompson's competition team T-Town MMA. Our students get to work out with great people, acquire awesome skills, and work to keep our own art competitive against any style of fighting. The MMA work outs on Tuesday and Friday evenings provide our students with extra training opportunities (at no extra cost) and the chance to compete or participate in a supportive team environment. T-Town MMA classes emphasize muay thai, brazilian jiu jitsu, greco roman wrestling, no gi submission wrestling, boxing, and anything that works!
